While Christmas is the happiest time of year, it can also be very…confusing, especially when you are going to spend it in a Buddhist country like Vietnam. So, how can you enjoy a very Merry Christmas when it’s just another day here in Saigon?
1. Embrace your inner tourist
Although Christmas isn’t as big a deal here as it is in the Western world, it doesn’t mean the holiday isn’t celebrated at all. In fact, festive lights and Christmas trees are up everywhere as early as mid-November. Ho Chi Minh City is so gorgeous at this time of year, bathed in light and glitters and Christmas carols. So pull your camera out and be ready for a tropical Christmas.
2. Enjoy a feast
It’s very hard or almost impossible to find turkey in supermarkets. So if you’d like a traditional Christmas or New Year meal, you can either have it at 4 (or 5)-star hotels or order in advance and have them delivered to you. If you fancy a combination of East and West cuisines, then Hôtel Des Arts offers Christmas Brunch (24/12, from VND 2,088,000++/ adult), New Year’s lunch buffet (31/12, from VND 888,000++/ adult), and New Year’s Eve dinner buffet (31/12, from VND 1,888,000++/ adult). Nothing feels more warm and festive than an exquisite meal with an optional accompaniment of fine wines.
In spite of the small Christian community, there are some beautiful churches you can check out in Saigon during Christmas. For example, Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, which is a few minutes away from Hôtel des Arts Saigon, is a must-go. Churches on Pham The Hien street in District 8 and the ones in Go Vap and Tan Binh districts are also hypnotizing.
4. Be prepared for a crowd
It will be crazily crowded on Christmas and New Year. Everybody in Saigon will pour down the streets and party hard. So another way to experience the festival in Saigon without getting lost in the sea of people is to secure a sit at rooftop bars like the Social Club. Social Club Rooftop Bar provides a phenomenal place for street viewing with a cooling cocktail in hand.
