Saigon Notre Dame Basilica

Where is Saigon’s Notre Dame Cathedral?

Address: 1 Công xã Paris Street, Bến Nghé Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Officially named the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the cathedral stands at a prime central location in District 1. Situated directly across from the Central Post Office—an architectural masterpiece of French design—the site creates a harmonious dialogue between past and present. Shaded tree-lined boulevards and the expansive square surrounding the cathedral further enhance the serene beauty of this historic enclave.

Notre-Dame Cathedral’s history

Notre-Dame Cathedral of Saigon holds a fascinating history that reflects the cultural convergence between France and Vietnam from the late 19th century.

  • Early Period (1863–1877): Initially, the French built a temporary wooden church along the Kinh Lớn Canal (now Hàm Nghi Street). Due to termite damage and structural decline, colonial authorities decided to construct a more enduring sanctuary.
  • Construction (1877–1880): Groundbreaking began on October 7, 1877, under the direction of architect J. Bourard, whose design won a competition for its harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. All building materials—from bricks to cement—were imported from France. The cathedral was officially inaugurated on April 11, 1880.
  • Later Milestones: In 1895, two steel spires were added to the bell towers, raising their height to 57 meters. In 1959, the statue of Our Lady of Peace was installed in front of the cathedral, giving rise to the familiar name “Notre-Dame Cathedral.” In 1962, the Vatican elevated it to the status of a basilica.

Architecture of Saigon’s Notre Dame Cathedral

The cathedral is an architectural masterpiece distinguished by its graceful elegance and solemn grandeur. Designed in Neo-Romanesque style with French Gothic elements, the structure is renowned for its Marseille red-brick façade, remarkably resilient over time. The twin soaring bell towers and historic clock further enhance the cathedral’s majestic presence.

Planning Your Visit to Saigon’s Notre Dame Cathedral

Currently undergoing restoration, with completion expected in 2027, the cathedral remains accessible for visitors to admire from the outside and explore the surrounding square.

Opening Hours & Mass Schedule

Due to ongoing renovations, interior visits are limited. However, guests may still attend Mass at designated times. The cathedral is open daily from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Weekday Masses are held at 5:30 AM and 5:30 PM, while Sundays include additional services in the early morning and late afternoon.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is between 7:00–9:00 AM or after 4:00 PM, when the light is soft and the weather more pleasant—perfect for photography. In the evening, LED illumination transforms the cathedral into a luminous spectacle, reminiscent of a miniature Paris in the heart of Saigon.

How to Get There from Hôtel des Arts Saigon

From Hôtel des Arts Saigon, it takes approximately 10 minutes on foot. Walk along Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai Street, turn left onto Phạm Ngọc Thạch Street, and the cathedral will appear before you. Alternatively, you may take bus routes 30 or 36, or book a Grab/taxi at a reasonable fare of approximately VND 20,000 – 30,000.

Dress Code for Visiting

Visitors are encouraged to dress respectfully, particularly if attending Mass. While casual attire is acceptable for outdoor exploration, overly revealing clothing should be avoided. When entering the cathedral, ensure your outfit is modest, and hats should be removed.

Highlights Not to Miss

One of the most notable features is the statue of Our Lady of Peace, set against the leafy Công xã Paris Square. Visitors can capture stunning photographs from various vantage points—especially from the Central Post Office or nearby rooftop cafés.

Beyond admiring the architecture, embrace the rhythm of local life by enjoying “cà phê bệt” (casual street-side coffee) or simply savoring the tranquil atmosphere around the cathedral grounds. Bring a handful of corn kernels to feed the flocks of pigeons, creating vibrant and picturesque moments.
